The polarizer came quickly and undamaged. Its performance is great as I’v had no problem taking away pesky reflections when at the proper angles. There are no problems with the quality of what its suposed to do. I do not like the slim filter personally because i cannot attach my ND filter holder (screw in) to it, nor is it possible to even put on your lens cap. My small fingers are able to adjust it easy enough but sometimes it gets lodged onto my lense for some unknown reason. Also, amazon had charged me with shipping (which I expected), but when the delivery guy came to the door he double charged me for the same price.

Decent glass, but not worth it for the price, March 13, 2010

This Heliopan is a nice filter, but the features are lacking. There is no coating, and you cannot fit a lens cap on.

I returned the Heliopan and got the Nikon 52mm, which has just as good glass (maybe even better), has multicoating, is the same thickness (5mm) but also fits a lens cap.

I’m not saying that the Heliopan is a bad product, but for less money, you can get a better filter in the Nikon.

I have owned SLRs for years and always made it a point to use UV filters. One to protect the lens and with film the filters improved the image quality.

Well afer resisting for years I finally took the DLSR plunge and did not realize what a conterversay existed in the digital world regarding UV. Some defend the use for the protection and some decry UV filters saying digital is compensated for UV and totally un-necessary.

There is even a further school of thought in the pro UV world on the filter. Multi-coated or not, in-expensive or top dollar with opinions ranging from price does not matter to the higher the better.

I was not aware of the war raging and when I bought a new Canon DLSR and a 17-85 and later a 55-250 and a “nifty” fifty 1.8 I originally bought a SumPak multi coated UV filter for the 17-85. The school of thought is that multi coating reduced the flare factor and allowed more light transmission. At first I was happy the SunPak reduced UV, did not affect the picture quality and I felt good about letting my wife use the DLSR as she was new to it.

I did a little more research and did find a couple of articles the seemed to settle the debate on whether to filter or not. Lenstip.com tested 20 UV filters and from their results I felt that not only were UVs effective I like the idea of the protection offered. They rated Hoya HMC and Pro1s the top and the Marumi was as high rated as the B&Ws. This filter was not tested as it came out later. But it has I am sure the same or better coating than the Marumi in test with a higher light transmission and like the Hoya Pro1 is designed for digital.

For giggles I bought the Marumi DHG and the Hoya Pro1 in 58mm with both arriving in the same mail. The Marumi was as well packed and as spotless as the Hoya as a matter of fact my wife said neither looked like they had glass in them. Even more importantly the multi coating on the Marumi was as effective as the Hoya in side to side comparisons. The 72mm Marumi IMO was as clean, clear and non- relective as the Hoya. I feel good about the brand, the quality, the apparant non effect on light and the lens protection. Good Buy. Very good UV filter at much lower price, November 19, 2011

I researched a lot before taking this one. Fast delivery and in great condition. fits well and tight, can add other filters on easily. I compared with my friend’s HOYA HMC UV(0) and couldn’t find the difference from the pictures taken. at this price, it’s no doubt a great buy.

Good inexpensive filter, August 11, 2011

I purchased this filter to use on my Tamron AF 18-270mm VC non-PZD lens. I did not have any problem screwing the filter on. The ring is small enough that it did not cause any vignetting at wide angle. With such a small ring, I thought I would have problems putting the lens cap on. In the past, I purchased a low profile filter for my 16-35mm lens. After placing that filter on the 16-35mm lens, I could not get the lens cap to grip on at all. This Marumi filter did not have that problem. The lens cap easily clip on as if without the filter. I would recommend this filter.

Here’s a shocker!, February 26, 2011

Heliopan, right or wrong, is the most revered name in filters. They apply more optical coatings, and they are generally more expensive than the competition. They are supposed to be the best of the best. Let’s not forget that Heliopan is even a cool sounding name. I only have one Heliopan filter, the 706211, and it will be my last Heliopan. There is a short list of things that matter on filters. Right at the top is the requirement that the surfaces be perfectly flat and parallel. My filter surface was flawed. I thought maybe it was just dirty, so I carefully cleaned it with Formula MC from The Filter Connection, which is designed specifically for coated filters. The flaw wouldn’t come off. So there it is.

Was the flaw going to visibly degrade images shot through the filter? Certainly any degradation would be extremely subtle, but so would the difference between an image from this filter and one that costs one-third the price.

I’ve decided to go with B+W filters from here on. My number-one reason for using UV filters is keeping my lenses clean and protecting them from damage. B+W filters don’t have as many coatings as Heliopan, but shear numbers of coatings don’t mean a lot. Also, even if coatings were perfect in their spectral properties, a law of diminishing returns sets in as the number of coatings goes up. B+W has one thing that Heliopan and the top-of-the-line Hoyas (also a good choice) do not: they have a hard, tough, easy to clean surface. With B+W, you don’t have to use Formula MC or whatever to avoid permanently smearing or blotching your filter. Since I use filters specifically to keep dirt out of lenses, it follows that my filters get dirt on them. Having filters that are very easy to clean makes sense for me. I should mention that B+W is second only to Heliopan for snob-appeal.

If you’re reading this review, you are concerned about filter quality. Here’s how I look at it. If I use a cheap, uncoated filter, I’m going to have to take it off before I shoot. If I use a high-end filter, I can leave it on for about 50 percent of shots. For my most important shots, I always remove the filter.

Coatings reduce reflections at filter surfaces. The biggest benefit is the reduction of reflections that rattle back and forth inside the filter, creating effects like solar flare and generally reducing contrast. This is even a bigger deal for filters than it is for lenses, all of which have multi-coated optics. It’s a big deal for filters, because the surfaces are parallel and more prone to the bad effects of reflections. Lens designers are careful to avoid parallel surfaces.

Finally, I’ll comment on the utility of the UV-blocking property. UV light is shorter wavelength than visible light, and as such it scatters more off of the finer aerosol particles in the air. Shooting over a long optical path (like a sweeping landscape), the cummulative effect of the UV scatter puts a significant amount of UV into your camera. In the days of film this was a big deal, although films were made less UV sensitive over the years. Digital sensors are inherently fairly insensitive to UV. In addition, DSLR sensors have a UV blocking layer applied over the detector array. As a result, you will likely never detect any improvement in image quality from using your UV filter. But it does depend on your camera. At one point, Leica screwed up and released a camera model with poor or non-existent UV blocking on its sensor. You badly needed a filter on that model, which is a crying shame, considering the fact that any filter degrades the image. Leica, who makes the finest cameras in the world, and is tied with Hasselblad for the finest optics, may never live that one down. If you actually can get two images that show the reduction of UV by a filter, please add a comment to this review. Look for a reduction in bluish haze. I’d love to hear from you.

I hate giving a very negative review, and I almost never do it. I know manufacturers like Heliopan are hurt by reviews like this. On the other hand, we consumers are hurt when they fail. We have to stick together, and we have to give honest feedback.

great filter, November 27, 2010

i hesitated before the purchase because of the price. but after i received and used it with my new Canon wide angle 16-35mm, i can say it’s worth the money. my pictures are beautiful and look nice. i also like the quality of the product. its multi-coating is the proof that the filter has been manufactured with high technology. it has the merit to be used with such a great wide angle. thank you.

As always Heliopan filters are a great addition to your photographic gear. I either get Heliopan or B+W filters for lens protection as they are quality made glass with the least distortion and the price is reasonable. I only use filters on dusty, windy or wet conditons and at the beach.

Excellent, September 23, 2010

Excellent constructions, nice and “heavy”….gives you the idea of a quality glass product rather than the flimsy cheaper ones. No sense in putting a piece of low quality glass in front of your expensive lenses. And is a slim ring filter, so no problems on your wide angle lenses. Also the lens cap fits nicely and snug, can barely tell I have a filter on.

Is just an added protection to the lens so there is not much to review other than the build quality. Does not affect photos or metering in any way.

Definitely recommended.

i have this on my lens all the time to protect, i have a 70-200 and i dropped the lens once in yellow stone, and this filter protected the glass.
